Rowan Alba Ltd is a Scottish Charity supporting homeless and vulnerable individuals towards a more stable life. Rowan Alba seeks to empower vulnerable and marginalized individuals in securing and developing a fruitful and productive homelife and future.
Do you want to make a difference to the lives of homeless men as they settle into their new life with Rowan Alba?
If so, we would be delighted to hear more about you!
At Rowan Alba we specialise in creating homes for life for men who have lived on the streets, sometimes for many years. At our Thorntree Mill development we create a supportive community where each tenant is able to live with dignity.
We firmly believe that homeless people should be free to make their own decisions and be encouraged to live as independently as they possibly can. If you share our outlook, then we would be absolutely thrilled to read your application.
We are now actively searching for a Support Worker to join our team at Thorntree Mill in Edinburgh. We have a full-time, permanent position available at a charitable organisation that is committed to helping those in Scotland experiencing, or at risk of homelessness.
As a Support Worker you will be working with people who are alcohol dependent, have complex (often homelessness related) health needs and are prone to challenging behaviour and episodic poor physical and mental health.
Please download the Job Description and Person Specification to learn more about the role.
A unique employment opportunity (challenging, entertaining, rewarding, inspiring) in our Thorntree Mill Service, helping homeless men settle into and sustain their new homes in a supported accommodation service.

The Support Worker will provide positive, practical, and emotional support to the residents of our service that promotes choice and encourages personal responsibility. To be an effective Team Player in a challenging environment and establish and maintain efficient professional relationships with a range of external services.
Reporting directly to the Senior Support Worker (Line Manager), a member of the Management Team, and as such sharing responsibility for the leadership of the organisation and the management of staff.
In Celtic mythology, the Rowan tree was known as the Travellers’ Tree because it prevented people on a journey from getting lost. Rowan Alba aims to do just that.
Rowan Alba cares passionately about the services it delivers providing marginalised and sometimes misunderstood individuals in Scotland with a home for life. Rowan Alba offers a broad range of services including its highly respected Community Alcohol Awareness Service (CARDS), Supported Accommodation, One to One Support and the Rowan Alba Learning Centre. A new Chief Executive Officer is sought to lead the passionate and empathetic Rowan Alba team comprising support workers, leaders, coordinators, peers and volunteers all of whom are committed to ending homelessness.
All of Rowan Alba’s services are framed around addressing the issue of social isolation by offering tailored one to one support and by accepting people as they are. This is supported by the organisation’s values of acceptance, support and inclusion.
The founding CEO of the organisation is planning to step down in 2023 following 25 years of commitment to the growth of the charity and its services. Rowan Alba therefore seek a new CEO who will bring experience and knowledge, a deep commitment to the strategy and values of the organisation and a proven ability to work independently at a senior level.
Candidates should be experienced in working in a muti-disciplinary and complex stakeholder landscape and will have a record of achievement at a senior level in a high-profile voluntary, commercial or public organisation. Candidates will also be confident in being an ambassador for the organisation seeking to persuade and influence in public spheres. Experience in the social housing sector while of significant interest, is not essential.
You will be working with a focussed and experienced team who are passionate about tackling homelessness and the work that Rowan Alba delivers. Rowan Alba’s desire is for the incoming CEO to be a ‘brand builder’ and a driven individual who wants to make their mark in the sector, acting as a representative for the organisation and driving its growth.
