Columcille provides a safe and supportive healthy social environment which offers creative daytime activities and a sense of community from its premises in the Morningside area of Edinburgh. We support people who have learning disabilities, and mental health needs through arts & crafts, cooking, woodwork, printing, gardening, pottery, drama, holistic therapies and dance. We have a minibus and driver who provide transport and community access. Seasonal celebrations form part of the rich social life of the centre. Some 1-1 support is provided in the local community.

We provide relationship centred support that upholds the dignity and value of each human being and supports their development and growth.

Relief workers cover staff absences due to illness, holiday or training. There are no guaranteed hours, but for flexible and available individuals there can be regular work.

Main Roles and Responsibilities

  • Provide support to service users to learn new skills, develop socially, and gain self- confidence and greater independence. This may be small group or 1-1 support.
  • Be attentive to group dynamics and proactive in creating a positive atmosphere.
  • Respond positively and calmly to any behaviour that challenges.
  • Provide personal care and support with using wheelchairs and mobility aids.
  • Provide cover on the centre’s tea break and lunch rota as required.
  • Tidy workshops each day and help maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Be guided by Columcille policies and procedures and the SSSC Codes of Practice.
  • Take part in induction, staff training and supervision meetings.

  • Able to explain and demonstrate what a person-centred approach means.
  • Experience of one to one support work with people with learning disabilities.
  • Knowledge and skills relating to at least one of the work activities listed above.
  • Interest is using social therapy and social pedagogy in work
  • Become a member of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme.
  • Available for minimum of two days in a week to make the work mutually worthwhile.

Kitchen Workshop Co-Leader - 3 days

Columcille is founded on the ideas of social therapy which originate in the thinking of Rudolf Steiner.

The café at Columcille is used by individuals who attend the centre and staff and is the social heart of the building providing morning and afternoon tea breaks, and a cooked lunch each day. The post holder will share responsibility for running the café at Columcille, supporting a small group of adults with learning disabilities to prepare lunch and tea breaks. The post holder will work closely with the other workshop co-leader who works Thursday and Friday, in planning and coordinating the smooth running of the café including record keeping, food and equipment ordering, stock control. Maintaining a high standard of food hygiene and cleaning routines is an important part of the role.

We are looking for someone with experience of supporting adults with learning disabilities, knowledge and experience of meal preparation and menu planning, and an interest in working for an organisation working from the ideas of social therapy and social pedagogy.

The post holder will support people to learn new skills, and work safely according to food hygiene standards.

Experience of supporting adults with learning disabilities is essential, capacity to work on own initiative is essential as well as knowledge of food preparation.

We are recruiting a workshop leader to run our small, part-time joinery workshop three days per week. The workshop leader supports service users to gain practical skills and facilitate their participation in the social life of the workshop and centre. In addition, there is the option for the post to include 1-1 support work on two days, making this up to a 5-day post, supporting individuals 1-1 within the Centre and in the community.

Support Worker – Café

This post is based in our café and the post holder will be supporting the running of the café on 2 days, taking over from a staff member who has ran the café full-time for 25 years and is reducing her work days. The postholder will start work in the café immediately on a Monday only and they will work elsewhere in the centre on a Thursday to enable their integration into the service, then taking over the Thursday in the café at a date to be agreed in 2022.

This is an exciting and challenging opportunity for someone who enjoys working with people to facilitate them to do as much as possible for themselves. The primary focus of the role is on supporting and enabling others, whilst ensuring a healthy lunch is cooked for around 25 people. Experience of supporting adults with learning disabilities and autism is essential as well as experience of food preparation and cooking.

We have a vacancy for a driver for our 12-seat minibus.

This position is on a temporary basis (3-6 months) to cover long term sick leave of our driver.
