Established in 1998, Staf (Scottish Throughcare and Aftercare Forum) is a membership organisation for all those working with young people leaving care. Staf is a national organisation which represents all 32 Local authorities in Scotland and is funded by membership fees, Scottish Government and other major charities. At the centre of all our work is the voice of young people leaving care and making the change that will allow them to live happy successful lives on their own terms.

The role

Thanks to funding from The Promise (A Good Childhood) this is an exciting opportunity to use your youth work skills to influence change and amplify the voice of care experienced young people within the justice systems by supporting us to expand Youth Justice Voices into a national network, with a specific focus on establishing youth-led steering groups beyond the central belt.

With a qualification in Community Education and a proven track record the successful applicant will engage with young people with experience of the care and justice systems in order to amplify their voice and support systems change. This will be done in a collaborative way with Youth Justice Voices staff, young people and partner agencies to expand the work of the project into a national network.

Staf, (the Scottish Throughcare and Aftercare Forum) is the only national membership organisation in Scotland working with care experienced young people and the professionals who support them, with the vision of creating a country where the wellbeing and success of young people leaving care is indistinguishable from that of their peers in the general population.

Our current Board of Directors has a wealth of experience and knowledge of the sector, and bring passion and commitment to supporting Staf in making our vision a reality. Our leadership team are now looking to bring additional skillset and experience to the Board, specifically with the remit for oversight of our financial reporting to the Board.

You will have a financial qualification and/or relevant expertise in charity finance.

Experience of grant funding and fund accounting would be helpful. You will have the same legal duties as all other Directors. Your primary role is to oversee and support the CEO running the financial operation on behalf of the Board and to report to the Board as part of its governance responsibilities.

In particular we want to continue to have the experience and voice of care leavers on our Board. If you have skills and experience in any of the above areas and you want to help Staf to continue influencing policy and practice, create platforms for care leavers and practitioners to have their voices heard, and offer opportunities for networking, collaboration and sharing good practice – then please let us know.

A rare opportunity has arisen for the right person with experience of working within Throughcare and Aftercare to join the Staf team on either a secondment or fixed term contract basis. We have a proud heritage of bringing the workforce together to respond to the concerns that frontline practitioners and managers have about the major difficulties care-experienced young people face during their fragile transition to adulthood and independent living. Over the years Staf has facilitated the development of co-designed Publications, Resources and learning and development opportunities informed by both Workforce and the care-experienced community.

As the sector responds to the challenge of #KeepThePromise; incorporation of UNCRC Rights of the Child and the intent to develop a National Care Service in Scotland, it is vital that we have someone in this role to ensure Staf is at the forefront and supports its member-organisations, practitioners and managers from across the public, voluntary, and private sectors to work together to improve the life chances for all of Scotland's care-experienced young people.
