Charity registered in Scotland SC048100
ABOUT US:
Duncan Place Community Hub is a social enterprise and registered charity based at 4 Duncan Place, EH6 8HW, a 3-storey listed building next to Leith Links providing:
The hub is home to a diverse range of organisations and has a growing programme of activities and events. The organisation is managed by a dedicated team of staff and a volunteer board of trustees. The current community programme includes a wide range of activities designed to appeal to a broad variety of community members. This includes regular health & wellbeing activities, arts and music activities, children and adults Lego clubs, a community choir, a craft group, community cinema sessions and a variety of one-off workshops. We will be happy to explore ideas for new activities that meet the wishes of our community.
Activities are delivered by in-house staff and freelance facilitators, with the Community Events Coordinator leading this team and reporting to the CEO. To ensure the financial sustainability of Duncan Place is balanced with affordability for the community, activities usually have a low attendance charge. They are very occasionally free when funding allows. Our warm, inclusive atmosphere is often remarked upon and maintaining this for our community and colleagues is a key aspect of the organisation.
Universal acceptance is essential at Duncan Place Community Hub, and we welcome applications from those who represent the diverse nature of the Leith community. For clarity, please note that this role is purely for activities and events organised by the Duncan Place team. Tenants and external customers hiring rooms by the hour are wholly independent; they organise their own events. This role concentrates solely on the Duncan Place Community Events programme.
OVERVIEW OF ROLE:
We are looking for a creative, enthusiastic, and committed Community Events Coordinator to support the growing programme of activity in this exciting community owned social enterprise.
The Community Events Coordinator will lead and line manage the events staff and cooperate with other members of the team to plan, organise, market, deliver and report on a comprehensive programme of community activity that is responsive to the community’s needs, and which provides the community with opportunities for personal development, friendships, fun and active citizenship with the aim of reducing social isolation and increasing wellbeing.
You are expected to have a degree of flexibility and work with the rest of the team to ensure that all shifts are covered. Shifts are rota’d in advance and the weekly hours will include at least one evening per week, at least one weekend day per month and other weekday daytime hours. Work will be based in Duncan Place Community Hub; this is not a hybrid role.
4 Duncan Place was built in 1920 as an annexe to Leith Academy and then became a council run community resource centre. Due to austerity budgets the council closed the building in Sept 2014 and proposed demolition. A group of locals established the Duncan Place charity and carried out significant fundraising. This led to a major refurbishment and a community asset transfer meaning that the charity now owns and manage the building. The hub re-opened in 2020 and has grown significantly with the charity generating income from leases and room hire.
Overview of Role:
Duncan Place Community Hub are now seeking a Community Host to join our small team of staff. This is a varied role where you will help to keep everything running smoothly in this busy hub. As part of the team, you will ensure our four by the hour rooms are set up and ready for our customers, welcome them upon arrival and ensure they reach the correct location within the building.
Between room bookings, you will support the building and facilities coordinator to keep our building running smoothly, safely and presented to a high standard; this includes room set up & take down, reception duties, contributing to our health and safety processes and procedures and responding to smaller maintenance tasks as needed, e.g. putting up shelves, updating signage, occasionally painting walls & woodwork.
We are looking for someone who takes pride in giving a warm welcome and great service, and who understands that this includes the standards of the building as well as the in-person aspects; someone who will work with the team and can use their initiative to plan ahead and be proactive in getting tasks completed to a high standard and with as little inconvenience to our customers as possible.
We have a wonderful and diverse community of building users and universal acceptance and respect is essential. You are expected to have a degree of flexibility and work with the rest of the team to ensure that all planned and reactive maintenance takes place with the minimum of disruption to tenants and room hirers. Shifts are rota’d in advance, and the weekly hours will include at least one evening per week, at least one weekend day per month and other weekday daytime hours.
As tasks are based in Duncan Place Community Hub, hybrid hours are not possible.
