At Down’s Syndrome Scotland we believe in the value and potential of every individual with Down’s syndrome. We will not stop until everyone living with Down’s syndrome in Scotland, and those supporting them, are given the opportunity to achieve their fullest potential and we have lots of exciting plans in place to try and make that happen.

We want to add new expertise to our Board of Trustees in 2025 to amplify our ambition.

So, if you want to help us with our mission and you can volunteer your time and expertise, we want to hear from you. Training and support will be provided.

As a member of the Board of Down’s Syndrome Scotland, you will be expected to:

• promote and develop the charity to the benefit of its members and the wider Down’s syndrome community in Scotland;
• contribute actively to the Board of Trustees’ role in giving strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating organisational performance;
• ensure the effective and efficient administration of the charity and its resources, continuously striving for best practice in good governance; and
• always act in the best interest of the charity, its members and beneficiaries, at all times.

We welcome applications from all and are particularly keen to add to the diversity of the Board by hearing from people who are often less represented on charity Boards including younger people, individuals from an ethnically diverse background and people from rural and island communities.

In addition, we are particularly keen to strengthen our skills in the following areas:

• health and social care, including primary care and learning disability services;
• education and early years; and
• business development, including fundraising.

GCF is recruiting up to three new Trustees to replace members who are retiring from our Board over the next few months.

GCF’s Trustees work together to provide oversight to the organisation and support to the employees. We would particularly welcome applications from people with a background in issues related to poverty and inequality, teachers/social workers with experience of working with families in poverty and people with legal, financial or fundraising expertise.

There are a maximum of twelve Trustees. Trustees are initially appointed for up to 4 years and may be re-appointed for up to a further four years. New Trustees will be expected to join one of our three sub committees

The core aim of Glasgow Care Foundation (GCF) is to relieve poverty. Our mission is to help 10,000 people over the next decade. We provide essential household items to individuals and families in need, particularly to those who cannot receive assistance from other agencies. We also support key small local community and school projects throughout Glasgow. Details are available on our website

The Foundation has an investment portfolio of around £8m which is managed by external Investment Managers in accordance with the Board’s investment policy. Investment income of around £250k annually is used to fund grant giving and meet overhead expenses.

The Foundation has five part-time employees, a Welfare Officer, Trusts Manager, Fundraising & Business Development Assistant, Marketing Assistant and Accountant, who all work from home.

The Foundation has a Care Committee which supervises the Welfare work, the Marketing Committee which supervises the Trust, Fundraising & Marketing staff, and the Finance Committee who supervises financial control.

All new trustees will be supported through an induction and training programme to help you understand how our Board works, your responsibilities and to make sure you are comfortable and able to contribute successfully. More experienced Board Members will be available to support you. The role is voluntary and unpaid, but we hope that working with GCF will be a rewarding experience, helping to support vulnerable people in need.

Time Commitment

There are 6 Trustees’ meetings a year, in person usually at the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow. Meetings are currently at 11am on Mondays and last approximately 90 minutes. At meetings we discuss and decide on policy, strategy and governance issues, provide oversight of the Investment Managers, review our financial position and approve grant applications. The Care Committee and Marketing Committees also have short online meetings approximately six times a year in addition.

Motor Neuron Disease (MND) is a rapidly progressing, terminal, illness for which there is currently no cure nor effective treatment. Life expectancy post diagnosis is, on average, just eighteen months.

MND Scotland’s vision is a world without MND. Until that day comes, we’re on a mission to ensure everyone affected by MND across the country has our support every step of the way. Our current three-year strategy builds on the achievements of the last forty years and also seeks to correctly position MND Scotland for a sustainable future to ensure we deliver our mission. We’d like your help to do that. Together, we can make time count.

We are recruiting up to 5 Trustees to join our Board. Whilst we’re always interested in receiving applications from a wide range of backgrounds, at this time we’re specifically inviting applications from individuals with the following skills and experience.

• Income Generation*

• Health & Social Care or Local Authority
• Early years candidates, regardless of discipline, looking to gain first Board experience

As a Trustee you will play an important role in setting the strategic direction of the charity whilst providing support, guidance and constructive challenge to the Executive team. You will also act as an ambassador for MND Scotland and help us ensure that everyone right across the country knows of the work we do and how we can help them if they need us.

Becoming one of our Trustees is not something to be undertaken lightly. It takes commitment, passion and dedication. You may be pushed out of your comfort zone on occasion or indeed frequently. If that makes you uncomfortable then you’re probably not who we are looking for. If however, you are looking to help make a real difference to people’s lives and to grow both personally and professionally then we’d be really keen to hear from you, particularly if you have a background in any of the specified areas we are looking for.

Previous Board experience would be great but it’s not essential. You don’t have to have a personal link to MND. What is much more important is your passion, ability to think strategically and your desire to get involved and make a difference. It’s also important that you know MND Scotland has a strong commitment to embracing diversity and inclusion.

The Borders Carers Centre is a well-regarded and successful charity/organisation. We provide tailored information, advice, emotional and practical support to young people and adults who look after a relative or friend who, due to illness, disability, mental health conditions or addiction, could not manage without their help.

We are seeking a creative, entrepreneurial individual with a successful track record of leadership, ideally as a Manager, to achieve our ambitions as the leading organisation supporting Unpaid Carers throughout the Scottish Borders.

You will be a person with enthusiasm, determination, vision and superb interpersonal and team building skills. You will be able to provide a strong visible presence to statutory partners as well as all stakeholders, engendering trust and confidence and giving clarity to our vision and mission.

As our Manager you must be passionate about improving the lives of Unpaid Carers and have a proven record in strategic leadership as well as the ability to meet the challenges of attracting and managing resources in an uncertain environment. It is critical that the person appointed has the ability to lead and develop staff to provide excellent and agile services.

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate the flair to initiate innovative new projects as well as manage and develop our existing range of services, including those in which we take a leading role with partners. Knowledge and experience in the Health & Social Care Sector and knowledge of the voluntary sector is essential.

We would particularly like to hear from you if you have three years’ leadership experience as Manager at a senior level and proven ability to motivate, develop, delegate and lead a team.
