Role
Fresh Start provides support to people moving on from or those at risk of homelessness.
Since 1999 Fresh Start’s core mission has been supporting people to “make a home for themselves” as they move on from homelessness. Typically, people have been living in temporary accommodation and have been allocated unfurnished, poorly equipped or decorated local authority properties. Our services give people immediate support at a critical transition point in their lives and provide longer term support enabling them to sustain their new tenancies and settle in their new community. Over the last 5 years our work has developed further to incorporate services focusing on the prevention of homelessness through tackling poverty and inequality.
Our 4 areas of focus cover:
(1) Move-In support services: a collection of services supporting people transitioning from homelessness and temporary accommodation.
(2) Empowerment and Poverty Prevention Services which support people develop skills, knowledge and social network so that they are better equipped to deal with the issues and difficulties they face.
(3) Food Support Services which respond to the current food crisis faced by many in Edinburgh and allow individuals and families to access food in a dignified manner.
(4) People-led, Place-based Community Development through Fresh Start leading role and involvement in key policy making groups and in pushing for system change through learning.
We’re looking for an enthusiastic, proactive and self-driven Fundraising and Community Engagement Officer to help grow income and engagement from individuals, community groups, and local supporters.
Working as part of a small, dynamic fundraising & com team, you will deliver campaigns, fundraising events, and donor stewardship activities that reflects Fresh Start’s values and impact. This is a hands-on, operational role within a small and supportive team — ideal for someone looking to develop further their career in community fundraising.

About the project
The Hospital Inreach service is part of a 12-month pilot across Forth Valley. You will be working with people experiencing homelessness who are admitted to Forth Valley Royal Hospital. The project supports people to complete courses of treatment within hospital and to plan for a discharge into accommodation that suits their needs and aids their recovery.
We are recruiting two 20-hour posts to deliver this pilot project, which replicates a service we have successfully run in Edinburgh for several years.

About the role
Working alongside clinicians in the hospital settings, you will provide one-to-one person-centred support to people in hospitals. You will work with individuals to enable them to identify housing options, personal outcomes and priorities for their health and wellbeing and link them to local support services and activities.
About you
You will have experience supporting individuals with complex social and emotional circumstances, as well as a solid understanding of the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness. You will apply strong interpersonal skills to deliver effective one-to-one support as well as manage relationships with multiple partner agencies across Forth Valley.
You will genuinely believe partnership working is key in supporting the people we work with. You will be resilient and perform effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Purpose of the service
Springboard helps young people experiencing homelessness build confidence and get ready for work, volunteering or learning. It is person led and young people can stay on the programme for as long as they need it. The majority of the young people on this programme come from our own homeless accommodation services: Keymoves, Stopover, Number Twenty and My Space.
In 2024 Four Square remodelled its employability programme Springboard, into a mentoring programme. We shifted the emphasis from qualifications and work to increasing confidence and working with young people to explore their interests and find their passions.
Now with National Lottery Fairer Life Chances funding we are expanding the programme to include a Wellbeing Practitioner. Through the experience of the last 12-18 month we know that many of our young people struggle to engage, and the pre-engagement phase of the programme can be prolonged. The addition of the Wellbeing Practitioner is to support the transition from interest in the programme, to being ready to fully experience the Springboard programme.
Purpose of the Role
The Wellbeing Practitioner will provide support to young people aged 16–25 who are experiencing homelessness in Edinburgh. Your focus is to support these young people to expect and experience a better future. You’ll help them build confidence, take care of themselves and pursue interests.
Many of the young people you will support will be struggling with poor mental health, low self-esteem and social isolation. This can prevent them from having hobbies, engaging in work, learning, volunteering, or friendships and generally preventing them from thriving.
Through consistent mentoring, wellbeing support and positive experiences, you will help young people reconnect with what makes them feel good, discover their strengths, and take meaningful steps towards independent, fulfilling lives.
Assistant Community Food Worker

About the role
This new role will contribute to the delivery our new Extended Table project, funded for 5 years by the National Lottery Community Fund.
The project is a partnership with 5 other organisations across the UK. All delivery partners will bring people together, tackle isolation and boost confidence through inclusive food projects – from growing food and cooking, to sharing healthy meals.
You will assist the Community Food Worker to organise and run community meals and cooking skills sessions, preparing the food alongside our with volunteers and trainees. You will also support volunteers and trainees to develop their skills and confidence. This is an exciting opportunity within Food Education, and you will be involved with growing our service as well as our reach beyond Edinburgh
About You
You will have some experience with assisting with group activities, ideally food and cooking related. You will enjoy cooking and be passionate about helping others to get involved. You will be outgoing and good at developing relationships with people. You will be a reliable and an effective team player with a can-do attitude.

About the role

The post holder will be responsible for running a calendar of food related events.
These include our Supper Clubs and Masterclasses which bring together people from different communities to prepare food and eat together. You will also contribute to the development of our social eating spaces.
As well as providing a unique experience and new skills, our events highlight how our work with food can remove barriers to addressing social and health inequalities.
About You
You’ll be enthusiastic about food, community, and social impact. You will have experience of organising and delivering events, and bring strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a passion for creating welcoming, inclusive spaces.
